Frank Wiebenga offers a beautifully balanced approach where he perfectly blends learning by ear with reading sheet music. He uses smart teaching philosophies that focus on hearing and feeling notes before you look at a page.

When it comes to his credentials, he’s an active gigging musician in jazz bands and tango orchestras, giving him great real-world stage experience.

What I love here is that you get to choose your own music, even if it’s just a random YouTube video you love.

Plus, you can pick flexible booking options like paying per single lesson, which lets you cancel up to 24 hours early without penalty. He even offers cheaper daytime rates if you book your slot before 6:00 PM.

Just keep in mind that you still have to pay the full single-lesson rate for your very first session since he doesn’t offer free trials.

Pros

  • Discounted daytime rates before 6:00 PM
  • Flexible loose lesson booking options
  • Teaches multiple musical genres smoothly
  • Allows students to pick their music

Cons

  • No free trial lessons available

Hours: Monday to Saturday 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Music For Life features elite, conservatory-trained instructors who are all active performing artists in the Netherlands. They share practical shortcuts from their own musical journeys instead of just pushing rigid practice.

I caught up with an expat friend who takes lessons here, and she loved how they give you deep individual attention through private sessions.

Their standard lesson blocks last a generous 45 minutes, giving you plenty of time to warm up and practice on the keys. You can easily choose a flexible bi-weekly routine to fit a busy work schedule.

Plus, I love that they also offer custom corporate tracks and excellent singing lessons if you want to expand your musical skills.

However, their shorter 30-minute options are strictly age-restricted for kids under 14. On top of that, they’re completely closed on Sundays, which might limit your options if you’ve got a tight weekend schedule.

Pros

  • Elite conservatory-trained instructors
  • Flexible bi-weekly scheduling available
  • Private sessions with zero crowds
  • Longer standard forty-five-minute blocks

Cons

  • Completely closed on Sundays
  • Shorter sessions are age-restricted

I learned and enjoyed a lot

Music for Life is a really nice music school with a wide variety of instruments and styles.  I did both piano and singing lessons and in both lessons I learned and enjoyed a lot.  If you’re looking for a place to learn music while having fun, you really should reach out to them!

Well organised with great and passionate teachers

Already a student for 4 years! The school is well organised with great and passionate teachers. It’s suitable for adults but definitely also kids and young adults. Yasam is teaching me how to sing and play guitar and I like every lesson. He really know how to get more out of me. Every year a concert is organised (this year online due to Covid), which shows how much fun, but also how much quality the school is.

Ton Weenink runs Muziekschool Speelmuziek. He focuses on completely shaping every session around your personal learning style and musical interests.

The curriculum scales smoothly from playful learning for kids up to technical preparation for conservatory exams. He uses a clever visual system with colored dots on the keys to help total beginners play music easily.

It’s a massive perk here that you can completely bypass long city waitlists because he offers immediate placement. He can even travel directly to your home within the city if you want to cut down on commuting times.

But because Ton runs the studio alone, scheduling flexibility is bound to one person’s calendar. If he gets sick, your lesson faces cancellation since there aren’t any substitute teachers. Also, traveling to your location adds a travel surcharge to your base fee.

Pros

  • Immediate placement with zero waitlists
  • Flexible in-home city coverage available
  • Accessible colored dots beginner method
  • Versatile curriculum scaling for all ages

Cons

  • Single-instructor availability risks
  • Added cost for home convenience

Excited to improve more and more with his help

I started learning the piano with Ton around a year ago, and before that I thought that picking up this new hobby as an adult would be impossible. Ton, walked me through the basics and adapted the classes to my needs, and learning pace. I highly recommend Ton, and I am very excited to improve more and more with his help!

Wonderful teacher

Ton is a wonderful teacher. He is teaching Piano to our daughter. He is patient and really tries to make her interested in Music and make things fun for her (instead of dry lessons). Definitely recommend him!

Hours: Monday to Friday, 10 AM – 8 PM; Saturday, 10:30 AM – 7 PM

Marzenna Donajska brings elite university-level instruction to local students, drawing from her background at the Chopin University of Music.

Her tailored lessons incorporate the famous Chopin method to help you develop a natural technique on the keys.

When I dropped by her private music room, the high-end Schimmel grand piano instantly caught my eye. I also learned that she records your sessions so you can take the audio files home to study later.

I love her true multilingual support in English and Dutch, which makes the studio very welcoming for international expats. Plus, instead of a long contract, she offers flexible 5- or 10-lesson cards.

Just note that she focuses strictly on private tracks, so you won’t find group classes or ensemble formats here. Her solo-instructor schedule also means last-minute changes can be quite tough to secure.

Pros

  • Elite university-level classical instruction
  • Flexible packages via lesson cards
  • True multilingual support for expats
  • Premium grand piano and recording gear

Cons

  • Solo-instructor scheduling restraints
  • No group or ensemble formats

Learning with Marzenna is such a pleasure

Marzenna is a lovely piano teacher. She would play the piano with me and even simple songs would sound beautiful. Learning piano as an adult is not simple, but learning with Marzenna is such a pleasure and I’m always looking forward to my piano lessons.

Great pedagogue on top of an exceptional pianist

Very passionate teacher, with an impressive piano stored inside her study room. Marzenna never forgets how important is to take pleasure and have fun when learning a new instrument, which makes her a great pedagogue on top of an exceptional pianist.

Very passionate about teaching music

Luke is a very patient and knowledgeable guitar instructor and knows how to adapt to his students needs, which is rare to find. I’ve been taking private duo lessons with a friend for a year now and we have seen significant progress in our playing (and singing)! The other instructors at the academy are also very passionate about teaching music to all ages (ukulele, bass, guitar, piano, singing, etc). It’s always fun to see some of the teachers perform at gigs around Amsterdam! I highly recommend this academy 🙂

Abilities are exceptional

Luke’s academy and lessons are absolutely what I was looking for – his approach, his experience, his abilities are exceptional and I couldn’t recommend him or his academy more. I am 42 and had never played an instrument before, and I’m able to learn my favorite songs and actually play them! Its pretty cool.
