5 Best Coding Classes in Amsterdam That’ll Turn You Into a Tech Pro

Quality of Instruction: We evaluated the expertise and teaching style of instructors, whether they break down complex ideas into easily digestible information and provide real support to students.

Hands-On Learning: Coding is best learned by doing, so we focused on classes that include exercises or real applications rather than just lectures.

Flexibility: We considered schedules, part-time options, online vs in-person formats, and how easy it is to fit the class into a busy life in Amsterdam.

Support & Feedback: Programs that offer instructor feedback, mentorship, and community forums scored higher in our list.

When I first thought about learning to code, I imagined it would mean staring at a screen full of confusing symbols, not knowing where even to begin. As a complete beginner, the whole tech world felt exciting.

I tried watching a few tutorials online, but without guidance, I quickly felt stuck. I realised that I needed a proper instructor if I really wanted to understand the basics.

So I started looking into programs around the city that were beginner-friendly. I compared programs, read reviews, and paid close attention to which ones offer real support rather than just theory-heavy lessons.

After narrowing it down, I ended up with a list of coding classes that truly cater to all levels. If you’re learning to code in Amsterdam but don’t know where to start, here are my top recommendations.

How much do coding classes cost in Amsterdam?

Classes can range widely in price depending on the format and intensity. Short beginner workshops or hourly lessons may start at around €30–€50 per hour, while multi-week courses cost between €800–€2,500.

Leading our list is Codethatidea, which is perfect for young learners who are curious about how games, apps, and AI actually work.

Courses here start with Scratch for younger kids and progress to Python, Machine Learning, and Generative AI for older students.

We appreciate that lessons are project-based, allowing children to actively build and test things instead of just listening and doing homework afterwards.

Apart from the different courses, there are also options for class settings. Classes can run in small groups of up to 10 students or in 1:1 sessions. Nevertheless, all follow a clear 10-lesson structure led by professional educators.

Of course, they also make sure that online safety and digital literacy are included in every course. Parents often mention how reassuring it is that children learn to surf the internet in a smart and responsible manner.

The main drawback to their services is availability, as small group sizes mean spots can fill up quickly.

Pros

  • Project-based learning
  • Wide range of coding and AI courses
  • Strong focus on online safety
  • Taught by professional educators
  • Small group setting
  • 1-on-1 classes

Cons

  • Limited available slots per course

The lessons were informative, engaging, and very well organized

“We can highly recommend this coding course for kids! Our 9-year-old daughter absolutely loved it. The lessons were informative, engaging, and very well organized. It built a strong foundation and sparked her interest in the world of programming.”

– Iryna Klymko, Google Review

The course is great for teaching children all the basics of programming

“My daughter finished level 2 of coding with Scratch course. She really enjoyed it and had a great time working on the projects. The course is great for teaching children all the basics of programming in a visual and playful way. Snezana is an amazing, competent and positive teacher. I was also allowed to sit in the classroom during the lessons, which made my daughter feel comfortable from the start! I highly recommend it!”

Bit Academy positions itself as a tech school that adapts to the needs of students, and that’s the main reason why it landed on our list.

Whether you’re just starting out or already in the industry, we like that they offer a clear program for every skill level. It makes it easy to see where you fit and what your next step should be.

There’s even an MBO level 4 vocational program, an accredited HBO Bachelor’s in software development, and Bit Academy Pro for professionals who want to study alongside work.

And in their teachings, you’ll notice their flexibility. Instead of following one rigid track, students move step by step on their own learning path. Coaches are also given time to support learners individually.

Students say that this created a more personal and guided experience, far from what they expected from a tech-focused course.

However, the MBO and HBO programs do have formal entry requirements, so they are not open to all. Applicants need specific prior diplomas and must meet age criteria before enrolling.

Pros

  • Clear MBO, HBO, and Pro pathways
  • Coaching support
  • Flexible learning platform

Cons

  • Formal entry requirements

No boring, mandatory classes, but flexible learning opportunities

“I highly recommend the Bit Academy program to anyone who prefers hands-on, independent learning instead of listening to a teacher all day. You’ll work extensively in teams or independently, and learn to collaborate peer-to-peer naturally. The coaches have extensive experience as software engineers and guide you in a way that truly connects with real-world situations. No boring, mandatory classes, but flexible learning opportunities, such as optional coding sessions you can attend or request yourself if you get stuck. For me—someone who wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after high school and doesn’t like the traditional education system—this was the best choice. Want to see if it’s a good fit for you? Definitely visit an open house!”

– Wessel Willemsen, Google Review

The program is truly diverse

“I’ve been taking a data analysis course at Bit-Academy for four months now. The program covers various analysis methods, and thanks in part to this course, I’ve discovered a new way to analyze data more accurately and quickly. I’ve already been able to apply this in my current job, which has resulted in a two-week reduction in the time I spend analyzing data monthly and quarterly. Because this course is primarily self-learning, you learn by doing (which works best for me) to understand, clean, explore, and visualize data. Attention is also paid to legislation and regulations. The program is truly diverse, and I highly recommend it.”

Codam takes a very different route compared to the usual programming schools. Instead of lectures and exams, the focus is on learning by doing.

There are no traditional instructors here, no fixed schedules, and you don’t even need a degree to apply. But this doesn’t mean you’ll be navigating it alone; there’ll be people to guide and support you, or even newbies who’ll figure it out with you.

When we looked into their Open Days event, many visitors mentioned how refreshing it was to step away from the lecture and go straight into hands-on problem solving.

That said, the freedom can be challenging if you prefer a structured program or direct instructions.

Being part of the global 42 Network, Codam has connections to other partner campuses around the globe. This means more opportunities and networking if you ask us.

Together with this, the school also promotes inclusivity, actively supporting and providing equal opportunities for all backgrounds.

Not to mention, we like that there are no tuition fees, which takes another burden off students’ shoulders.

Pros

  • Free tuition
  • Project-driven coding
  • No degree required
  • Strong peer-to-peer learning model
  • Inclusive community

Cons

  • No clear teaching structure

The school really does its best to support its students

“The school really does its best to support its students to the best of their abilities be it with help finding housing or covering other costs that may come up and even helps find you an internship after you’ve passed the curriculum. This is an incredible thing to do considering it receives ZERO funding from the government. It never asks anything in return from its students either in terms of money. You come as you are and you learn from your peers and friends, no teachers required. Highly recommended! Love the community they’ve built.”

– Niks Hariman, Google Review

You leave the core curriculum with a very good base knowledge

“A school that really tries to listen and help the students. Nothing is perfect but see that they at least try to accommodate and listen to everyone is really nice. A place to grow and learn a lot from each other. The projects are super nice too and you leave the core curriculum with a very good base knowledge (and even a bit more) better than most universities now a days.”

JetLearn is designed for kids who are curious about how technology really works and want to go beyond basic screen time.

As an online AI academy, it introduces children to coding through fun, interactive activities before gradually leading them toward more complex work in artificial intelligence and robotics.

The learning journey is split into Foundation, Advanced, and Pro Levels so that students can grow at a steady pace. We especially like how projects go from simple games in Scratch to Python apps, chatbots, and training beginner-friendly AI models.

Because classes are done in small groups or one-on-one formats, the experience feels personal rather than one-size-fits-all.

Students are carefully matched with a teacher based on their level, and parents receive regular updates on their child’s progress.

Aside from weekly sessions, there are competitions, events, and feedback meetings that help the learners stay motivated. The focus isn’t just on coding skills but also on confidence, problem-solving, and thinking independently.

The only thing to keep in mind is the six-month minimum commitment, which may feel too long for those who prefer short-term programs.

Pros

  • Personalised teacher matching
  • Small group and one-on-one options
  • Strong focus on AI and future tech
  • Regular progress updates for parents
  • Provides active learning opportunities

Cons

  • No short-term program available

My teacher is very supportive and guides me every step of the way

I have been a part of Jetlearn for the past three years, and it has been an amazing experience. My teacher, Sana, is extremely kind, and we learn many valuable skills, including how to create our own portfolio websites! My teacher is very supportive and guides me every step of the way. This program is beneficial because it prepares me for the future and enhances my skills in robotics. Currently, I am working with Roblox Studio, and I am very happy with my progress.

Great teachers, well-organized courses

“Our son has been with JetLearn for two years and we’re very happy. Great teachers, well-organized courses, and excellent communication. A must for any kid interested in tech! Thank you!”

Ironhack is often a go-to choice for adults who want to move into tech without spending years in traditional education.

While the bootcamp can be intense, it’s clearly built around getting students job-ready in a short amount of time.

Their Web Development program is a great example, taking beginners all the way to building full-stack JavaScript applications. We like that it’s still manageable for newcomers, yet hands-on enough with projects that mirror real developer work.

If coding isn’t your only interest, there are also programs in data analytics, UX/UI design, cybersecurity, data science, cloud engineering, and other in-demand tech fields.

Career support is another strong part of the experience, too. Students receive help with portfolios, CVs, mock interviews, and access to hiring partners, even after graduating.

But you have to consider that the pacing here is fast, the workload is heavy, and balancing it with work or other commitments can be challenging.

Pros

  • Beginner-friendly
  • Strong, hands-on learning
  • Wide range of tech bootcamps
  • Provides career support and coaching
  • Focus on in-demand industry skills

Cons

  • Intensive workload

The team and the content of bootcamp were amazing

“I attended Full Stack Web Development Bootcamp part time in Jan2024. It was really great experience but rewarding as well! The team and the content of bootcamp were amazing! I’m really happy to be a part of them. For 0-level students, I suggesting everyone has to do some research before joining the course because the course structure is very complex for beginners without prior knowledge of IT. I am very happy with IronHack. Definitely I will recommend IronHack for whoever very keen to joining into IT firm. Thank you”

– Sowjanya Kambhampati, Google Review

It was intense, full of learnings with an amazing teacher

“I followed the part time UX/UI bootcamp. It was intense, full of learnings with an amazing teacher and a group of students I still regularly meet years after. I appreciated the balance between theory and practice, with pro interventions and use cases I displayed in my book. It was a huge milestone in my career switch.”
